Gabi, from Costa Rica, and Gaston, from Chile, met in 2021 during residency in Connecticut. Technically, they worked in the same program—but with Gabi a second-year and Gaston a first-year, they somehow managed to miss each other for months.

Then came bowling night.

They were on different teams, in neighboring lanes, and Gabi was, by her own completely unbiased account, dominating the competition. Gaston noticed the very competitive Costa Rican next door and decided this was his moment. Maybe it was love at first sight. Maybe it was competitive interference. History will never know.

What we do know is that he walked over, started talking to her, and left bowling night with something much better than a winning score.

They clicked immediately. Soon came dates, gym sessions, endless laughs, and Gaston cooking for Gabi—which certainly didn’t hurt his chances. Six months later, they met each other’s families, passed the necessary background checks, and made things official.

Then, because residency apparently wasn’t challenging enough, they added long-distance.

In 2022, Gabi moved to Rochester while Gaston stayed in Connecticut, turning five-hour Friday drives into a perfectly reasonable weekend activity. A year later, Gaston moved to Chicago, and the drives became trains, flights, airport pickups, and increasingly creative travel itineraries. Chicago became a city they both loved, filled with favorite places and some of their best memories.

Eventually, When will we see each other next? became Where do we want to build our life?

The answer was New York—which, naturally, required Gaston to do yet another year of residency. So he moved to Rochester, and after years they were finally in the same city. Turns out, seeing each other without purchasing a ticket first was pretty great!

What was supposed to be temporary started feeling a lot like home. Gaston decided to stay in Rochester for another four years to pursue his own professional goals, and suddenly the question wasn’t Where? anymore.

It was Together?

For Gaston, the answer was easy.

On December 22, 2024, surrounded by family and friends in Clearwater, Florida, he proposed. Gabi said yes—because after all those residencies, road trips, trains, flights, and airport goodbyes, saying no would have been a terrible plot twist.

And somehow, that one bowling night brought us here.
